Sightseeing in Moscow

Among the numerous monuments and buildings are many testimonies of architecture from past and present, monuments to famous writers, scholars and statesmen, as well as monuments and memorials in honor of great historical events. Moscow is situated on the Moskva River and is famous for its unique world-renowned architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly colored, elegant onion domes or the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. A significant architectural and historical monument is the Kremlin – a medieval city-fortress and the today´s residence of the Russian President. The Kremlin was built in the middle of the 12th and rebuilt in the 15th century. To this day the boundary walls and the 20 towers have been preserved.

Both, the Moscow Kremlin and the Red Square are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1990. Furthermore both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in within the city. Among the oldest monuments also are the Cathedral of the Dormition, the Cathedral of the Annunciation, the Cathedral of the Archangel and the Palace of the Facets (a building in the Moscow Kremlin). Later, the Church of the Twelve Apostles and the Patriarch's Palace and the Terem Palace, the Kremlin Arsenal, the Kremlin Senate and the Great Kremlin Palace (completed in 1849) were added. Located adjacent to the Kremlin is the Red Square – Moscow's main square. Here is also the Lenin Mausoleum.

Other notable buildings on the Red Square are, the GUM department store and the building of the Historical Museum – both were built in a style similar to the old Russian architecture style – as well as the Kazan Cathedral. Only a few hundred meters from the Kremlin walls is the Tverskaya Street. The street is now a gathering place of luxurious hotels, bars, restaurants and retail shops. Another popular tourist street is the Old Arbat Street.

Moscow's skyline is quickly modernizing with several new towers and modern buildings. Just five kilometers west of the Kremlin is Moscow City. A newly built district in Moscow with primarily commercial and office buildings house, including many architecturally spectacular skyscrapers (e.g. the „Federazija”- twin towers, Mercury City Tower). Another worth visiting locations and museums are the Seven Sisters (a group of seven skyscrapers), the Novodevichy Convent, Kolomenskoye, the Bolshoi Theater, Tretyakov Gallery, Shchusev State Museum of Architecture or the Pushkin Museum.

Nightlife and Dining

The restaurant scene of the city is hardly manageable, constantly new locations are opening, while others are closed. And also the prices are very different. There are restaurants that serve the entertainment, bars, cafes, fine restaurants, as well as fast food chains, self-service restaurants and canteens. One of the most famous dishes is borscht, a soup made from beetroot, which is served hot with sour cream.
Or the world-famous beef stroganoff (sliced beef, stewed in sour sauce), or ikra and krasnaya ikra (black or red caviar), blinis (the Russian word for pancakes, usually served with caviar or salmon and sour cream) and oladji (sweet pancakes with jam filling).
