Sightseeing in Shanghai
Shanghai is the most modern and westernmost city in the People's Republic of China. The historic center has disappeared to a great extent and has been replaced by newly built skyscrapers. A little part still exist as a tourist attraction.
One of the few historical landmarks in Shanghai include the seven-story "Longhua Pagoda" from the time of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and the Long-Hua Monastery with a three-meter-high Buddha statue. The waterbund, short The Bund, is a long water promenade where buildings were built in European style. Other popular attractions are the Peace Hotel and the Waibaidu bridge. Before World War II, Shanghai had the highest buildings outside the United States.
In the historic center of Shanghai visitors can fins a bazaar and the traditional Chinese Yu Garden (Yu Yuan), which was created in the 16th and 17th century. The garden has an area of 5 acres, and is divided into six general areas laid out in the Suzhou style. The most skyscrapers have been built in the district Pudong, there is also the Shanghai World Financial Center (492 meters), the Jin Mao Tower (421 meters) and the Oriental Pearl Tower (468 meters).
Other interesting attractions are the extravagant opera house Shanghai Grand Theater, the Shanghai Centre on Nanjing Xi Lu, the Lan Xin Theater in Changle Lu, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, which is located in the cultural center of Pudong.
Nightlife and Dining
The restaurant scene of Shanghai underwent many changes. In the last few years new refined and elegant premises were opened. Offering guests a wide selection of restaurants serving Japanese, Korean, French or other styles of cuisine. The Shanghai cuisine includes a lot of fresh fish, shellfish and crustaceans. Characteristic is a cooking technique that is practiced today in China: the red cooking also called Chinese Stewing. A fund is prepared from a dark soy sauce and rice wine, in which the food (fish, meat or poultry) is simmering for several hours. A classic accompaniment to every meal is rice.
Shanghai specialties are, for example, "Shanghai Crab" (steamed or fried crawfish), eel in oil, "Millennial eggs" (black eggs), beef "Quilin Ganshao Niu", refined seasoned and done, the "Eight Jewels "Chili paste, shrimp with sea cucumbers and roasted Mandarin fish.
Recommended are the Shanghai ravioli, stuffed with pork and finally grilled so that the soft interior contrasts with the crisp bottom, and carp-tail "Qingyu Shuaishui", Caotou vegetables "Sheng Bian Caotou", pine core with corncob "Songren Yumi", rice dumplings with sweet filling "thoughts Yuanzi", rice flour pastry "Canglangting Sijigao", boat cake "Lübolang Chuandian" and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves rice dumplings "Qiaojiapeng zongzi".
